Wal-Mart, Inc., the multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores, and grocery stores announced its elimination of the 24-hour operation at the West Union, Ohio store.
According to the Wal-Mart, Inc., the West Union store will close at 1 a.m. and reopen at 6 a.m. In 2015, Wal-Mart, Inc. announced the same practice with for 40 other Supercenters. “Closing in the overnight hours, will allow store managers to reallocate resources that should lead to better in-stock, cleaner and more organized stores to better serve shoppers during open hours,” said Brian Nick, corporate spokesman for Wal-Mart, Inc.
In 2015, retail consultant David Livingston said, “Any Supercenter grossing under $60 million per year is likely a prime candidate for closing overnight.” According to Wal-Mart, Inc., all third shift employees at the West Union store have accepted positions on others shifts.
“I don’t think Wal-Mart loses here. Few competitors are open overnight now. Wal-Mart stores shaving hours probably weren’t justifying their overnight sales to begin with. Taking a few extra hours to restock shelves, etc. combined with the labor savings will probably be a net positive,” said Long, CEO of Shift Marketing Group.
An official date for the change in hours has not been released but is expected to happen during the Spring.
