The Young Moore Unit 100 American Legion Auxiliary in West Union is joining a nationwide effort this April to recognize and celebrate the Month of the Military Child. As part of this annual observance, the Auxiliary will also participate in “Purple Up Day for Military Kids” on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, more than 1.6 million children, youth, and teens in the United States are growing up in military families, sharing in the service and sacrifice of their parents. The Month of the Military Child was first established by former U.S. Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger to highlight the important role these young people play in their communities and in the lives of their military families.
Communities across the country observe Purple Up Day each April by wearing the color purple to honor military children. The color purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military—Army green, Marine Corps red, Navy blue, Air Force blue, Coast Guard blue, and now Space Force gray—making it a unifying color for all military-connected youth.
Throughout the month, the West Union Auxiliary is encouraging local citizens, businesses, churches, schools, government offices, and civic groups to show their support by wearing purple on April 15 and displaying purple decorations throughout April.
This year’s theme is “Celebrating Military Children and Youth: Building Stronger Character and Relationships,” emphasizing the resilience, strength, and character of military kids as they grow and thrive amid the unique challenges of military life.
