The Ohio Department of Health is reporting very high flu activity across the state, along with a significant increase in cases of strep throat, upper respiratory infections, and pneumonia. With these illnesses spreading rapidly, health officials are encouraging residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves and others.
The Adams County Health Department took to social media last week to warn the public about the risks posed by these illnesses, emphasizing the importance of prevention measures to reduce the impact on families, schools, and workplaces.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza and other respiratory illnesses are highly contagious and can lead to severe complications, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Strep throat, caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria, can also lead to serious infections if left untreated, while pneumonia can be life-threatening in vulnerable populations.

To help curb the spread of these illnesses, health experts recommend the following preventive measures:
- Avoid close contact with sick individuals to reduce the risk of transmission.
- Stay home when you are sick. You should be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to work, school, or other activities.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of germs.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap isn’t available.
- Disinfect commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, countertops, and handrails regularly to minimize germ buildup.
Health officials also recommend getting an annual flu vaccine, which remains one of the most effective ways to prevent severe illness and complications from the flu. The CDC stresses that flu vaccination is particularly important for high-risk groups, including pregnant women, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and healthcare workers.
