Adams County is set to receive state funding for the construction of a new pickleball court, thanks to a $17,365 NatureWorks grant awarded to the Adams County Health Department. The court will be located at the Adams County Senior Citizens property at 10835 State Route 41 South in West Union, providing a new recreational opportunity for residents.
The funding comes from the NatureWorks grant program, which was established through the Ohio Parks and Natural Resources Bond Issue, approved by voters in November 1993. This program provides up to 75% reimbursement assistance to local government entities for acquiring, developing, and rehabilitating public recreational spaces. Since its inception, NatureWorks has supported more than 2,300 park projects across all 88 counties in Ohio.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is played on a smaller court than tennis, using a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. The game can be played in singles or doubles, making it a fun and socialactivity for all ages. Known for being low-impact and easy to learn, pickleball is especially popular among older adults but is enjoyed by players of all skill levels.
With the addition of the new pickleball court, Adams County residents—especially seniors—will have greater access to a sport that promotes physical activity, social engagement, and overall well-being.
