Davina Cooper Becomes County Chair
The Adams County Democratic Party ushered in a new era of leadership on January 9th as Davina Cooper was unanimously elected as the new County Chair during a committee meeting. Cooper succeeds Linda Stepp, who held the position through the 2024 election before stepping down at the end of the year.
The meeting, despite challenges posed by weather and parking, saw a strong turnout of committee members. Jeff Huxmann, the 1st Vice Chair, presided over the session, ensuring a seamless leadership transition that had been in the works since April.
Cooper brings over a decade of experience to her new role. A long-standing member of the Central and Executive Committee, she also served as a member of the Adams County Board of Elections for four years. Her political acumen includes leading statewide campaigns for Democratic candidates, including John Patrick Carney in 2014 and Steve Dettelbach in 2018.
Cooper graduated from West Union High School before earning both a Bachelor’s in Sociology and a Master of Social Work from Eastern Kentucky University. Currently, she works as the Senior Director of 24-hour Programming for a domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy organization serving five counties in southern Ohio. Her professional experience, paired with her academic background, underscores her commitment to community service and social justice.
“Everyone is just trying their best to survive,” Cooper shared, quoting her late father. This guiding principle has shaped both her professional and personal life.
In her remarks from a recent press release, Cooper reflected on the importance of human rights, quoting President Jimmy Carter: “America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense… human rights in-vented America.”
Cooper’s election marks a continuation of the Democratic Party’s grassroots efforts in Adams County. Residents looking to engage with the party are encouraged to reach out to their precinct committee members or connect with the Adams County Democratic Party on Facebook.
With a focus on inclusivity and fostering relationships, Cooper’s leadership aims to bring together individuals from all walks of life in support of shared Democratic values.
