Week of August 12th
The Adams County Public Library would like to thank you all for making the 2019 Summer Reading Program a success. Across all our branches, 245,900 pages were read, 46,746 items circulated, and 279 adults, 173 teens, and 298 kids participated! We were able to provide 570 hours of activities, including 56 programs which were attended by 995 patrons just like you. We would also like to congratulate this year’s grand prize winners. Congratulations to the winners at Manchester Library: Danielle Steward, Destiny Alexander, Harry Sheldon, Charlotte Preston, and Allyah Maynard. Peebles Library’s lucky winners, who each get a Kindle Fire tablet, are Leroy Heher, Addison Cole, and Cora Alexander. At North Adams Library, the winning readers are Mia Kingsley, Natasha Cox, Saxony Burns, and Georgia Gulley, who received one of three Kindle Fires and four King’s Island tickets, respectively. The five winners at West Union Library are Mason Mack, Vivian Grimes, Xavier Magie, Mason Nickerson, and Deborah Sheese.
Remember, teens, Manchester Library’s Anime Club with Michael meets Saturday, August 24 at 11:30 a.m. to watch and discuss anime, read manga, and make Japanese crafts together.
Adults, be sure to check out Colson Whitehead’s novel The Underground Railroad before the Bibliophiles’ next meeting on Monday, August 19 at 4:00 p.m. at Peebles Library. It won the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction and the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, in addition to receiving the Arthur C. Clarke Award and being selected as an Oprah’s Book Club book.
If you can’t make it to one of our libraries’ book clubs, check out Hoopla digital’s Hoopla Book Club Hub. Every three months, they choose a new book, providing discussion guides and author interviews. Beyond their quarterly Spotlight Selections, Hoopla Book Club also lists eight other recommended books that you can choose from. Hoopla digital’s always available materials allows you to borrow the eBook or digital audiobook whenever you want, so you don’t ever have to worry about not getting the book in time. Perhaps the best part of this online book club is that there are no assigned meetings or discussions. Instead, you can simply join the conversation using #hooplabookclub and #discoverreadshare to comment on and discuss the book.
Discover a fun technology that can bring your artwork and paper crafts to life with cool paper circuits! Our August STEM Saturdays’ activity connects art and science, engaging both the left and right sides of kids’ and teens’ brains. If you missed the one at Peebles Library, you can still experiment with them from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Manchester Library on August 17, West Union Library on August 24, and North Adams Library on August 31.
Library Resource Spotlight: As school starts back next week, remember that you can bring children, from preschool through 2nd grade, into the library to play ABCmouse. This popular Early Learning Academy is targeted for kids ages 2-8 and has an award-winning curriculum! With ten different levels containing more than 850 lessons, there are a variety of activities to help advance your children and grandchildren. Normally requiring a paid subscription, it is free to use on any patron computer at all of our Adams County Public Library branches.
