Being homeless is stressful for everyone, people as well as pets. When animals are abandoned, the lucky ones end up in animal shelters where they are treated with kindness, given fresh water and regular food, and kept in a safe, clean environment while they wait patiently for their chance to have a family of their own. Unfortunately, sometimes older dogs and cats never get that second chance. Malnourishment, illness, and stress can be a deadly combination in an already elderly dog or cat. Added to these issues is the fact that many people don’t want to adopt elderly animals because it will be “too hard” on the family when the animal passes.
At the Humane Society of Adams County’s Animal Shelter in West Union, staff and volunteers braced themselves in January when a 15-year-old Beagle named Little Man entered the facility. After nearly four weeks, it was obvious that, despite his sweet temperament, the elderly dog’s stiff joints and grey muzzle would cause him to be a very difficult guy to re-home. The call went out on social media to try to find a place for Little Man to live out his remaining days in the comfort of a real home instead of a noisy kennel.
On Sunday, February 19, a message was left at the Shelter from a family that saw the post about Little Man on Facebook. Within a few short hours, sweet, gentle Little Man was picked up by his new family and taken to his new home. He will now be able to live out his remaining days in safety and comfort, surrounded by a loving family. Though he doesn’t see or hear very well anymore, Little Man still loves to go for very slow walks, and loves to be petted and talked to. This is a wonderful happy ending for a very deserving old gentleman.
